Recruit Trainees and Qualified Dental Nurses

Are you looking to strengthen your dental practice with skilled trainees or qualified dental nurses?

Since 2013, Forward Academy has been offering the NEBDN-accredited National Diploma in Dental Nursing, providing exceptional training to our students. Upon enrolling in this course, our students require work placements where they can complete their Record of Experience (RoE) as part of their qualification.

By offering them placement, you not only gain motivated and knowledgeable staff but also contribute towards the dental industry and support the next generation of dental nurses in completing their courses.

Supporting Trainee Dental Nurses

When you hire trainee dental nurses who are enrolled in a course, you play a vital role in their education and professional development. Here’s how you can support them:

Witness Toolkit – View the Toolkit

The NEBDN provides a comprehensive Witness Toolkit to assist dental practices in supporting trainees.

What is a Witness?

A Witness is an individual who holds the specific qualification and is registered with the appropriate regulatory body relevant to the qualification the Learner is undertaking.

The Role of the Witness

The role of a Witness is to provide confirmation and testimony of the Learner’s competence in the relevant clinical procedure or activity, all of which are clearly mapped to GDC Learning Outcomes set out in the qualification content. The testimony must relate directly to the Learner’s performance in the workplace and can only be signed off by the Witness who has directly observed the task.

A key part of the training for Learners is their Record of Experience (RoE) or Record of Competence (RoC). This document details their development over the course of the programme. The Witness must ensure the Witness asset is completed within 14 days from the date of the clinical activity, detailing the Learner’s competencies in the specific clinical procedure.

FAQs for Employers (Dental Practices)

You will need to ensure that a qualified staff member is available to provide feedback on the student’s Record of Experience (RoE). Additionally, compliance documents specified by the NEBDN must be completed, demonstrating your commitment to supporting the trainee.

Hiring a trainee dental nurse can be highly beneficial and rewarding for your practice. Trainees start their journey with enthusiasm and willingness to learn, gradually becoming confident in assisting with routine procedures. You might consider having a senior staff member mentor the trainee, which also offers growth opportunities for your existing staff.

The responsibility of employing and managing the trainee dental nurse lies with your practice. You will interview and select suitable candidates, ensuring they meet your practice’s standards and integrate well with your team.

A trainee dental nurse needs to complete at least 16 hours of chair-side experience per week. They can work additional hours and may assist in other areas like reception, but they must dedicate 16 hours to dental nursing duties with the dentist.

Trainee dental nurses should be paid at least the minimum wage, as they are trainees, not apprentices. They cannot be paid below the minimum wage.

Upon completing their training, the future employment of the trainee should be discussed between the practice and the trainee. Many trainees choose to remain with their practices and pursue further training. Once they become registered dental nurses, they should receive appropriate remuneration and adhere to standard employment procedures.

If the trainee is not a suitable match for your practice, follow your standard employment procedures. Although we strive to ensure our trainees are well-prepared, we understand that not every trainee will fit every practice. Please inform us of any issues, and we will support you as needed.

Yes, you can hire multiple trainee dental nurses. This approach can help balance workloads and create a supportive, collaborative learning environment for the trainees.

Forward Academy offers extensive support, including regular assessments, access to learning resources, and guidance from experienced tutors. This ensures that trainees are well-prepared and supported throughout their training period.

Hiring a trainee dental nurse allows you to train staff according to your practice’s needs, contribute to the development of future dental professionals, and potentially retain skilled employees who are familiar with your operations. This approach can enhance the overall efficiency and quality of your dental practice.
