Overseas Dentists with GDC

All dentists must be registered with the GDC and licensed to work in the UK.

European Region

Dentists from the European economic region, with a primary qualification specified in the relevant EC Directive are able to register with the General Dental Council and practise in the UK on the basis of that qualification.

Non-European Region

Dentists from outside the European economic region, whose qualifications are not recognised for full registration with the GDC need to take the overseas registration examination (ORE). For information on the qualifications recognised for full registration, dentists should contact the Forward Academic Team today!

The ORE tests the clinical skills and knowledge of dentists from outside the European economic region whose qualifications are not recognised for full registration with the GDC. The examination is based on the UK dental curriculum and uses modern assessment methods to ensure a robust and consistent examination. Dentists who pass this examination become eligible to apply for full registration to practise in the UK.

Dental hygienists / Dental Therapists Registration with GDC

All dental nurses must be registered with the GDC and licensed to work in the UK.

European Region

To practise as a dental hygienist, you need to take an appropriate course approved by the General Dental Council (GDC). You will then need to register with the GDC.

Non-European Region

Overseas dental professionals with dental qualifications that are not yet recognised must apply for individual assessment at GDC. Once the assessment is complete, then only can overseas dental professional can apply for GDC registration in the UK.

These forms will be provided by the GDC later in the email. You will need to complete and submit it back to GDC.

Dental nursing

All dental nurses must be registered with the GDC and licensed to work in the UK.

European Region

Dentists from the European economic region, with a primary qualification of Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing are able to register with the General Dental Council and practise as gdc registered dental nurse in the UK on the basis of that qualification and training.

Non-European Region

Qualified overseas dental nurse also needs to register with GDC in order to start working as a registered dental nurse. If the qualification is not yet recognised in the UK, the individual must pass ORE examinations.
