Course Contents:

  • Professionalism and the Role of the Dental Nurse

    Aim: To discuss the roles and responsibilities of a dental nurse, including their professional responsibility, and to enable dental nurses to understand the importance of adhering to professional, ethical, legislative, and local policies relevant to working within the dental setting.

  • Health and Safety

    Aim: To identify and manage risks and hazards in the workplace in line with current legislative frameworks, government policies, and accepted good practices.

  • Dealing with Medical Emergencies

    Aim: To provide appropriate support in emergency situations and understand the role of the dental team within these situations.

  • General, Dental, and Regional Anatomy

    Aim: To demonstrate an understanding of general, dental, and regional anatomy and its relevance to patients’ treatment needs.

  • Oral Disease

    Aim: To demonstrate an understanding of common oral diseases, including oral cancer, and their effect on the oral cavity.

  • Prevention of Oral Disease

    Aim: To demonstrate the preparation of the dental environment and support the operator during a variety of preventive procedures.

  • Assessment

    Aim: To demonstrate the preparation of the dental environment and the support of the operator during an oral health assessment. To demonstrate an understanding of current legislation relating to confidentiality. To demonstrate support during the taking of dental images, processing images, and maintaining quality in accordance with relevant legislation and policy.

  • Restorative Dentistry
    Aim: To demonstrate the preparation of the dental environment and support the patient and the operator during the provision of restorative procedures.

  • Child Dental Health

    Aim: To demonstrate the preparation of the dental environment and support the patient and the operator during the provision of restorative and orthodontic procedures. To demonstrate appropriate patient management and communication techniques.

  • Minor Oral Surgery

    Aim: To demonstrate the preparation of the dental environment and support the patient and the operator during minor oral surgery. To demonstrate appropriate patient management and communication techniques.

  • Pain and Anxiety Control

    Aim: To demonstrate the preparation of the dental environment and support the patient and the operator during the provision of pain and anxiety control. To demonstrate appropriate patient management and communication techniques.

Assessment Process:

The NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing is assessed through two methods: a final Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a Record of Experience (RoE). The OSCE is a practical examination that assesses learners’ ability to apply their knowledge and skills in a clinical setting. The RoE is a logbook that records learners’ clinical experiences throughout the course.

Progression Opportunities:

Upon completion of the NEBDN National Diploma in Dental Nursing, learners can progress to further study, such as the NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education or the NEBDN Certificate in Radiography. Alternatively, learners can use this qualification to pursue a career as a registered dental nurse in the UK.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and have a good command of English. No formal qualifications are required, but a commitment to study and the ability to complete practical placements are essential.  Additionally, all applicants must undergo an initial assessment and a literacy assessment as part of the enrolment process.

The course typically takes between 12 months to complete, depending on the student’s pace and the scheduling of practical placements.

The course combines classroom-based learning, online study, and practical work experience (placement to complete RoE) in a dental practice.

Class Mode:

  • Online class includes virtual live online class; online class resources; and 1-to-1 online support; classes are every week (2 hours).
  • Face-to-face classes are on a fortnightly basis (every 2 weeks). The classes are available exclusively in Woolwich, Farnborough and Basingstoke. Specific details can be obtained by contacting the admissions office at 02070180221.

Available to enrolled learners for free at Forward Academy: RoE support class, practice materials, exam revision class, multiple mock exams, 1-to-1 student support and many more.

The total fee for the course is £1600 (excluding the exam fee of £510).

You will pay the full fee upfront. If you choose to pay the entire fee in advance, the total amount you need to pay will be £1900. This amount includes a discount of £210.

Yes, students must pass the NEBDN Written Exam and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to qualify for the diploma. The exams are online on the MaxExam app.

Yes, this course is an “Earn and Learn” qualification. As soon as you enrol on this course, you will be able to work in a dental practice as a trainee dental nurse at the national minimum wage rate. You might be able to start working even before your theory classes begin. This wage may increase with further experience.

Yes, you are required to work a minimum of 16 hours per week as a Trainee Dental Nurse.

If you fail or defer the final exams, you will need to pay an additional fee to retake the exams. It is advisable to contact the admissions office for detailed information regarding retake fees and the process involved.

Each student will have a dedicated assessor and tutor providing one-to-one support throughout the course. Additionally, there will be dedicated RoE support tutors available to assist with RoE.
